Where to Buy in France — and Where to Avoid
Cheap is easy in rural France. Cheap on sound ground is the trick. Here's every belt worth knowing, ranked by what really matters — the ground under it, the price, and how far it is from Calais.
The one rule: check the ground first
The single biggest mistake is buying a bargain on shrink-swell clay — it cracks the house (subsidence, tie-rods, “à démolir”) and it's miserable to grow veg on. It's the #1 cause of building damage in France, and it's getting worse. So before anything else, run the free Géorisques clay check on the exact plot.
